Cook Inlet Volcanoes - 4 Active Mountains

These mighty geologic wonders are “young” . . . all less than 2 Million years old and are part of the Aleutian Chain of mountains and Volcanoes.
Perenially covered with ice and snow, the breathtaking views are available from most of the Kenai Peninsula and from many of the fly-in excursions Alaska Hooksetters offers their guests.

The four active volcanoes within close proximity to Kenai via fly-in tour.

Mt. Augustine

Mt. Augustine, Alaska as seen from air and across Cook Inlet
An island with an elevation of 4,134 ft. is  situated across Cook Inlet from Kenai and 280 miles from Anchorage doesn’t pose a significant threat to human populations unless it creates a large tsunami. The youngest at 19,00 years, is also the most active with 6 eruptions this century. Augustine’s most recent eruption was in 2006.

Mt. Iliamna

Mt. Iliamna, Alaska as seen from across Cook Inlet and from flight-seeing tour.
On the west side of lower Cook Inlet at an elevation of 10,106 ft., Mt. Iliamna creates a spectacular vista for visitors to the Kenai Peninsula.  Although the last official eruption was in 1876, constant plumes of sulfurous gases create an eruption illusion.

Mt. Redoubt

Mount Redoubt, Alaska
At 10,197 feet elevation, Mt. Redoubt is the third tallest in the entire range
and closest to the city of Kenai. Having erupted 5 times since 1900, this active volcano also claims the most recent eruption in 2009, spewing mostly steam with some ash as high as 15,000 feet.  The eruptions lasted several months and the Kenai Peninsula received a coating of ash.

Mt. Spurr

Mount Spurr, Alaska as seen from Kenai Peninsula across Cook Inlet and fly-in adventure tour.
Is the highest volcano of the Aleutian Arc rising to 11,070 feet. Only about 80 miles from Anchorage, this stratovolcano last erupted in 1992. A major concern of eruptions here is its proximity to air traffic and the subsequent damage ash causes to jet engines.

Unforgettable . . .
